Frequently asked questions:
What is Polarity?
Polarity is a gentle, balancing form of touch therapy that can be performed alone or combined with massage in a "combo session".
It was developed during the mid 1900s by a chiropractor/ naturopath Dr. Randolph Stone. He had a successful practice in California but felt that there was an integral piece missing from his work and from Western medicine in general. He traveled to the east, namely India and China, and drew from the practices of Ayurvedic healing and acupuncture.
He realized that the basis of these systems of healing was the idea that the body has energy flowing through and around it. Blocked energy can show up as negative physical symptoms, such as joint pain and muscle tension.
After a polarity session, people tend to feel happy, relaxed, balanced, and more alive.
Is it okay to talk during the massage?
Bodywork is most beneficial if you are able to completely relax your body and mind. This is best accomplished in a quiet atmosphere.
For this reason, talking should be limited to feedback regarding the work received or of anything you feel needs to be adjusted.
Your practitioner will appreciate it, as massage takes care and concentration and is best performed from a quiet place.
How should I prepare for a session?
Before scheduling, consider your intention for receiving bodywork. This helps us determine what kind of work would be best suited for your appointment. Is your main goal to relax? To lessen physical pain? To recover from an illness or injury? To deepen your yoga practice? To gain more courage to create change in your life?
Must I be completely undressed?
If you are receiving a polarity energy session you will remain fully clothed.
Most massage techniques are traditionally performed with the client unclothed. However, it is entirely up to you and your comfort level.
I will leave the room while you undress, relax onto the table, and cover yourself with the clean sheet and blanket provided. You will be properly draped during the entire session to keep you warm and comfortable. Only the area being worked on will be exposed.
What can I expect out of a single session? Out of a series of sessions?
A single session can provide much relief. After your first session you may experience dramatic and sometimes long lasting changes in such areas of concern as relaxation, comfort, freedom of movement, or emotional stability.
Bodywork has its greatest benefits over time. The therapeutic effects of massage are cumulative, so the more often you get a massage, the better you will feel and the more quickly your body will respond.
From one session to the next, relaxation deepens as the chronic patterns of stress in the body are affected and released.
If you're getting massage to address chronic muscular tension or recovery from a soft tissue injury, more than one session is usually needed.
Please ask about a multi-session package, which makes regular therapy more affordable.
How should I take care of myself after a session?
Aftercare varies depending on the kind of work you receive, and may include recommendations for ice, heat, stretching, salt baths, etc.
Everyone will benefit, however, from drinking extra water after their session and taking some quiet time alone to let the work sink in.
What if I need to cancel or reschedule my appointment?
Let's form a relationship where we understand and respect the value of each other's time.
If you find that you can't make your appointment, I appreciate you letting me know as soon as possible.
I maintain a 24 hour cancellation policy and reserve the right to charge for a missed appointment.
